One Filipino crew member died as a result of boiler explosion which occurred onboard VLCC “MT NEW DIAMOND” on the 3rd of September 2020.
The ship caught fire off the coast off the eastern coast of Sri Lanka.
MT New Diamond which was chartered by Indian Oil Corporation was carrying 270,000 tonnes of oil from Kuwait to the Paradip refinery in India.
The 23 crew members onboard constituted of 18 Filipino and five Greek crew members.
MT NEW DIAMOND is a 20 year old Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) owned by the Greek company “Porto Emporios Shipping Inc”. The ship with a gross tonnage of 160,079 GT and a dead weight tonnage of 299, 986 DWT was built in Ikomasan by Mitsui Engineering and ship building in Japan. It is 330 meters long and has a beam of 60 meters. The ship was previously known as Diamond warrior and later as new diamond.
The Fire- MV NEW DIAMOND
The fire broke out in the Engine room of MT NEW DIAMOND at around 07:45 local time when the ship was about 65km east of Sri Lanka. The fire erupted as a result of the ship’s boiler exploding.
It was reported that the fire which was triggered by an explosion was initially brought under control before spreading upwards to the ship’s bridge.

The Sri Lankan Marine environment Protection Authority (MEPA) said that early on the 4th of September, two explosions were reported from MT New Diamond.
The Sri Lankan army said that there was no danger of an oil leak at that time. This was to reduce the tension as many believe this would be another Wakashio.
22 crew members were rescued (one injured) while a Filipino crew member died in the fire. 19 of the crew members were rescued by the commercial vessel Helen M, two by the Army and one by the Navy ship “Ranarisi”.
The firefighting crew from both Sri lanka and India are frantically working to put out the blaze aboard the VLCC super tanker- MT New Diamond.
CURRENT STATUS: MT NEW DIAMOND
The fire on the ship off Sri Lanka’s coast has been brought under control but is still not extinguished.
The Sri Lankan Marine Environment Protection authority (MEPA) said it believed that the ship’s cargo tanks were intact following the fire, but that a slight oil slick has been sighted.
