Bulk Carrier TW HAMBURG banned from port due to underpayment of Crew

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has banned the Bulk Carrier; TW Hamburg from Australian ports for 12 months due to the underpayment of the ship’s crew.

TW Hamburg is among a fleet of 16 others to be banned by AMSA in the past decade.

TW HAMBURG is owned by a Chinese company, “Shanghai Run Yuan Shipping”.

The ship “TW HAMBURG” (IMO: 9603520) is a Bulk Carrier that was built in 2012 (8 years ago). It is sailing under the flag of Liberia.It’s carrying capacity is 93229 t DWT. Her length overall (LOA) is 229 meters and her width is 38 meters.

AMSA discovered that the seafarers onboard the vessel had been underpaid during an Inspection.

The total wages owed to the seafarers is an estimated sum of $30,300.

Furthermore, AMSA discovered that the quantity and quality of food provided onboard was below the standards required by the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC).

Taking financial advantage and mistreating seafarers in this way is nothing short of exploitation by people in powerful positions.The majority of industry operators do the right thing by their seafarers, but for the few who do not – consider this a reminder that you will be held accountable.

AMSA received confirmation that the crew onboard ” TW Hamburg” got paid their outstanding wages.

Also, the crew members made it ashore inorder to be repatriated to their home countries.

Currently, the ship has departed Gladstone and will not be permitted to approach or enter an Australian port until July 29, 2021.

A Greek owned bulker “Agia Sofia” which is Liberian-flagged had also been banned on the 27th of July, 2020 by AMSA for underpaying it’s crew.

AMSA takes MLC Convention and IMO Regulations seriously and advises other agencies to do so too.
