How to obtain CoC Eligibility in Nigeria

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is responsible for issuing eligibility to the prospective candidates for the Certificate of Competency (CoC) Examination.

The Certificate of Competency (COC) Examinations are undergone yearly inorder to upgrade the ranks of seamen onboard merchant ships.

Nevertheless, all prospective candidates are advised to apply for a COC eligibility before a new class commence.

This implies that, a candidate can obtain his/her eligibility after a session of CoC classes kick-starts and before another commences.

Most applicants send in their applications between September to December each year.

Such periods are usually competitive because alot of people are applying for the same right and at the same time.

Hence, you are advised to beat the traffic by applying earlier.

Consequentially, an application may be rejected if the required number of applicants have been met.

Furthermore, The processing will be done at the Kiri Kiri Office of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

In this article, the guidelines and procedure involved in obtaining the Certificate of Competency Eligibility includes;

The CoC Eligibility Requirements:

1. Endorsement: The Shipping Master has to endorse your Seaman Discharge Book. This involves the counter signing of all entries by the Shipping Master.
2. Also, The prospective candidates will have to present photocopies of their documents in an “office flat file” (with their names, address and phone number written on it).
3. Cadetship Training Record Book will be required for visual inspection and documentation. The Record book is equally important. This is applicable only to cadets onboard a ship.
4. The cost for the Registration process is N 40,000. Note that this may be subject to change.
5. Arrange your documents in the following orders:
   • The application form with two passport photographs attached.
   • Academic Qualifications: O’ Level Certificates, Minimum of OND (Ordinary National Diploma) in Marine Engineering or Nautical Science, or an Associate Certificate in Marine Engineering or Nautical Science (from an approved institution).
   • Previous Certificate of Competency held (if any).
   • Basic Mandatory Certificate and Advance Maritime and Safety Courses Certificates.
   • Seaman Discharge Book (entries fully counter signed by the Shipping Master).
   • Sea Service testimonial in STCW format.
   • Seafarers Medical Certificate of Fitness.
   • Training Record Book signed by a Certified Master or Chief Engineer of a vessel (if applicable).
   • Birth certificate or sworn affidavit.
   • State of Origin.
