Swamp rig “Majestic” capsize near ovhor Delta state, 1 dead, 3 missing

Seplat Energy in an official statement announced a serious incident on the Depthwize swamp drilling rig “Majestic”. The swamp drilling rig capsized in the early hours of the morning on 15th of August, 2023.

The Swamp drilling rig “Majestic” contracted by Seplat Energy in a joint venture with NNPCL capsized while on transit to its planned location at ovhor, Delta state.

The Majestic has a capacity of 3600HP, water depth of 8-24 feet, draft of 7.5 feet, with a drilling depth of 30,000 feet and an accomodation space for 120 people. It is an offshore asset of Depthwize Nigeria Limited.

92 of the 96-member crew are accounted for and safe. However, tragically one fatality occurred during the
incident, while three other rig personnel are still missing.

Furthermore, it was added that Emergency response and rescue efforts working alongside the rig owner and the authorities have been activated and are onsite.

Most incidents occur as a result of decline in safety standards. A detailed investigation into the
cause of the accident will commence in a short while inorder to ascertain the cause of the incident.
