Everyone was excited at that moment. It was no longer fun for me because I had no means of communicating with my family and/or friends. I slept too early as a result of this coupled with a boring and stressful day. I felt like a prisoner left to wallow on an island all alone.

Please carry a means of communication when going onboard. I wouldn’t want you to feel what I had felt.

After serving my jail time (I call it that), we made way to the jetty for crew change. This is usually done every 6-8 weeks. It is a bridge between sanity and frustration. Staying too long onboard is a feat achieved only by the strong hearted.

I am strong hearted of course, so I asked to stay behind. That was after I got a new phone though, I couldn’t imagine bearing another life threatening mistake.

Staying more days onboard meant I would quickly obtain my sea time experience and become eligible for the certificate of competency classes.

I was disappointed though, I hadn’t grown as chubby as my mates in other companies. I felt exhausted and drained.

After a month at the jetty, we were done with all necessary checks and maintenance. At dawn, we casted off and were on our way to yet another offshore installation. The farthest of them all.

Usually, new crew members meant more drama, it also meant more experience for me.

I guess I will just wait and see how this all plays out.
