TOOLS/ EQUIPMENT NEEDED DURING SERVICING OF A FUEL OIL SEPARATOR/PURIFIER

The tools listed below are the basic tools required during routine maintenance and servicing of the Fuel Oil purifier. Ensure to stop the fuel oil separator/purifier before carrying out maintenance.https://sailor.com.ng/servicing-of-a-fuel-oil-purifier/

1. SPANNER– Ring, open ended/flat or combination spanners. The spanner size required depends on the maker of the separator/purifier as well as its construction and design. Usually spanner size- 10 (for safety device nut removal), 13(to loosen safety device fastening bolt), 19 (used to loosen the bolt and nut for the frame hood) and 24 (for tightening the special tool used to extract the disc stacks) are required (Example for Alfa Laval MMB 304).
2. CLEAN CLOTH/SOFT BRUSH/SPONGE: Either of the clean cloth or the soft brush can be used to clean the disc stack after they have been removed from the cleaning agent or fuel oil. The discs will have sludge particles which is smelly and sometimes stone hard. Cleaning with clean cloth will require the cloth to be readily available as the sludge will render a cleaning cloth ineffective after every 10-12 discs cleaned.
3. PIPE WRENCH: A small or medium sized pipe wrench can be used to pull out the oil filling device when topping up or changing the oil in the purifier sump.
4. LIFTING GEAR: A chain block can be used to raise the frame hood or separator intermediate frame during complete separator overhaul. Be careful of crush hazard mad ensure to remove bowl before lifting. Attach the lifting gear to the lifting eye or what most people call pad eye during lifting.
5. PLIERS: For removing ball bearing holder.
6. TORQUE WRENCH: Some screws need to be tightened to a particular torque. Example for frame hood to be properly secured, a torque of 45Nm is required.
7. PULLER OR EXTRACTOR: This is used to remove ball bearings
8. TIN HAMMER: The tin hammer is used to on the spanner for the bowl hood (special tool). Without this hitting force, it is impossible to open or tightly close the bowl hood.
9. SPECIAL TOOLS: Special tools are the tools provided by the manufacturer of the separator/purifier. These include; Spanner for Lock Ring,Spanner for bowl hood,Compression tool for compressing and extracting disc stack,Bowl lifting tool for removing the separator bowl,Mounting and dismantling tool for bowl spindle,Driving off tool.
