The Master and Chief Officer of Wakashio were arrested by the Mauritius Police in regards to the ecological damages caused by human error.
WAKASHIO is a Bulk Carrier that was built in 2007 (13 years ago) and is sailing under the flag of Panama.It’s carrying capacity is 203130 t DWT. Her length overall (LOA) is 299.95 meters and her width is 50 meters.
The Panamanian-flagged vessel belongs to Japan’s Nagashiki Shipping and was heading from China to Brazil when the accident occurred.
On 18 of August 2020, the Mauritius Police Force (MPF) arrested the two men on charges of jeopardizing the safety of navigation.
This was confirmed by Japanese shipping companies Nagashiki Shipping (ship owner) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (ship charterer).
Unconfirmed reports emerged that the crew onboard Wakashio were celebrating a crewmember’s birthday and approached the Mauritius coastline as they were searching for a wifi signal before the incident.

Although, Investigation is still ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.
Wakashio ran aground on the coral reef off Pointe d’Esny on 25 July and spilling at least 1000 tonnes of oil into the ocean.
This has affected the locals whose major source of National Revenue comes from tourism.
According to Mitsui O.S.K Lines, a team of specialists continues to work on recovering the remaining oil from the sea and coastal areas in order to minimize the impact on the environment.
Nevertheless, the bow section if the shop is being taken eight nautical miles from the outer limit of the 2000mts deep reef.
Although, the stern remains aground on the reef as there is still some residual oil in the engine room to be pumped out.
The bad weather in the area has delayed the operations.
