The Real Cause: Why the Bulk Carrier “wakashio” ran aground- Party and Wifi

Report has it that the crew onboard “wakashio” were celebrating a crew member’s birthday and had also routed along the Mauritius coastline to get a wifi signal prior to the ship’s grounding off the coast of the island. This may be the reason why the bulk carrier ran aground off the coast of the island.

The bombshell revelations – first reported by local newspaper L’Express – come from investigators who have interviewed the crew of the Japanese-owned, Panamanian-flagged ship.

Furthermore, the captain of the Bulk carrier “wakashio” could face negligence charges after it emerged the crew were celebrating a crewmember’s birthday and had headed nearer towards the Mauritius coastline to get a wifi signal just prior to the bulk carrier’s grounding on a reef off the island’s south coast. The massive Bulk carrier “Wakashio” ran aground on a reef off Mauritius on Saturday, the 25th of July 2020. The ship ran aground off Pointe d’Eesny, south east of Mauritius at around 1600 UTC July 25th.

The Local authorities had tried in vain to contact the ship ahead of the accident to warn it of the imminent danger. The crew were supposedly celebrating a birthday hence missing the initial urgent calls.

The ship which is on the verge of breaking up, has spilled around 1,000 tonnes of bunker fuel into the pristine Mauritian waters, creating the republic’s greatest ecological disaster.

A state of environmental emergency had earlier been declared on the island. It’s a joint effort as locals and the island authorities work together to curb the effect of the spilled oil.

The Panama Maritime Authority had earlier suggested the ship ran into difficulty because of bad weather, although data providers have shown there was no inclement weather around southern Mauritius at the time of the accident.

The Nagashiki Shipping Co.-owned vessel that run aground last month has broken up after spilling oil off the coast of Mauritius.

“The bigger part which was lying outside the lagoon is being towed toward the high seas,” the Shipping Ministry spokesman, Jasvin Sok Appadu, said by phone.

The other part of the MV Wakashio, which contains its engine and fuel tanks, is “safe and stable” and measures have been taken to prevent any further oil spillage, Sok Appadu said.
